The sacrament of Holy Orders is the sacrament by which deacons, priests, and bishops are
ordained. By this sacrament, men are commissioned for service in the Church by the
laying on of hands by a bishop.
Young men should consider the possibility of a vocation to the priesthood by which they
commit themselves to the Church. Priests are preachers of the Word and ministers of
sacred worship. Priests commit themselves to the Church through a life of consecrated
celibacy.
Older men should consider the possibility of a vocation to the permanent diaconate.
Deacons are responsible for preaching the Word and assisting at Mass. Deacons also
celebrate baptisms and weddings. Married men can be ordained as permanent deacons.
Young men and women should consider a possibility of a vocation to consecrated life as
religious men or women, as consecrated brothers or sisters.
